Lama girl Joanna sang on stage with Anuhea

I’ve been jamming to Anuhea ever since I first heard her when I moved to the island back in 2008.

My friend and I would harmonize to her songs on the radio and fanaticize about one day meeting her, imagining the day when we’d share the stage with her.

The first week of school, I got word that Anuhea was going to be the featured artist at HPU’s annual Pa‘ina Kick off concert. I immediately wanted to cover the event.

Backstage in a small warm-up room, staff writer Pavel and I anxiously waited for Anuhea to finish her song. As soon as she was done, she smiled at us and that was our cue that she ready for her interview.

I’m not the one to get all fan crazy, but I definitely was thrilled to finally meet her.

Anuhea and I instantly clicked as I told her of my own experiences in the musical world. She seemed genuinely interested. She opened up to me about her own journey and told me of her future plans with her baby boy.

She even invited me onto the stage later in the show, at first I thought she was joking but she really did ask for a volunteer and I took her up on it!

My heart was beating as fast as a hummingbird, first she had me sing with her, and then she gave me free rein!

I felt shy, but excited. It was a privilege to be on stage in front of all my peers. My goodness was everyone supportive through their cheering!

Now that my time at HPU is coming to an end, I plan to move to Texas to start a new chapter of my life. Believe me, signing with Anuhea will be something I will always treasure.

I know I will continue listening to island jams and smile, remembering the night I was singing on stage with the lovely Anuhea.
