Message from the Provost: 2014-2015 Tuition Rates

    By Matthew Liao-Troth, Ph.D. - HPU Provost. April 1, 2014 - 6:28 pm

Information from HPU Provost: Matthew Liao-Troth, Ph.D.

Hawai‘i Pacific University Board of Trustees has set tuition rates for the 2014-15 academic year. Undergraduate and graduate students will see only modest increases in the 3.9 percent to 5.3 percent range. Complete information regarding the tuition rates approved recently by the HPU Board of Trustees is available at www.hpu.edu/tuition.

In determining the new tuition rates, HPU carefully analyzed its costs and set tuition accordingly. Unfortunately, some costs are out of the university’s direct control — such as utilities, insurance and healthcare benefits for employees. While continuing to provide quality programs and services to students, HPU stays focused on operational efficiencies and reducing costs wherever possible. Additionally, HPU is in a competitive environment for faculty and staff, ensuring it pays competitive wages to attract and retain the best employees to serve students.

HPU is the third least-expensive university among all Western private universities according to the 2014 ranking by U.S. News and World Report. Barron’s has recommended HPU as a “Best Buy in College Education” among the 3,900 universities in the United States. The 2013-14 PayScale College Salary Report noted HPU as one of the “Top West Coast Schools for Salary Potential” and No. 1 in the state of Hawai‘i. According to AffordableCollegesOnline.org, HPU’s return on investment of $414,000 was more than $100,000 ahead of its closest in-state, private university peer.

The university recognizes that pursuing higher education is a big investment and affordability is challenging for many students and families. Information on financial assistance through HPU and external sources is available at the HPU Financial Aid website. Of note: The Holomua Scholarship is a tuition-waiver scholarship offered to full-time HPU students, and the deadline to apply for it is May 16, 2014. To help you afford education expenses, a monthly payment option is also offered.

HPU is committed to your success and that of your classmates. Whatever your academic, co-curricular and career aspirations may be, the faculty and staff are here to support you through your journey toward the goal of earning your degree and assuming your role among a learned society.
