Last week, Petr Michnev was named the PacWest Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Today, the Hawai’i Pacific star transcended his sport by being named the overall PacWest Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Michnev, regarded as one the best men’s tennis players ever at HPU, has also dominated the academic awards. For the past two seasons he has earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District and All-American Teams. The Czech native was a graduate student working on his MBA with a 3.6 GPA.
On the court he was named an All-American in both singles and doubles this season, making him a seven-time All-American in his HPU career. Just this season, Michnev has already been named the PacWest Player of the Year (for the second consecutive year), the PacWest Tournament MVP (for the second consecutive year), and the West Region ITA Senior Player of the Year. He finished the season 15-2 in singles and ranked #2 in the nation. With Thibaud Berland, Michnev is ranked #2 in doubles with a 21-2 record.
The award was voted on by the league’s 13 sports information directors. Michnev beat out the PacWest Scholar Athletes from baseball, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer and men’s track and field.
Michnev is up for one more award in his storied career. The PacWest Male Athlete of the Year will be announced next week, which pits Michnev against eight other MVPs from various sports.
