The Hawai’i Pacific Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams ran in the Chaminade University Invitational, bringing home first place for the women’s race and second for the men’s race.

Fiona McKenna battled not only against the Hawaiian schools that were competing, but also the wind that proved quite troublesome for racers. The windy conditions aside, McKenna still placed first overall in the race.

McKenna was not the only Shark that wouldn’t let the wind slow her down. Jamie Neal (2nd), Meghan Fairchild(3rd) and Marissa Kunsch (4th) all ran under 19 minutes for the 5k race. They were joined by Gabrielle Wisot andTaylor Sinn. Wisot really stepped up her performance to fill the fifth place spot on the roster, left open due to an injury. Wisot ran a 20:14 which is 20 seconds faster than she did in the previous race.

In the men’s 8k race the shiver of Sharks were led by Cody Bartlett who ran a 26:25 earning him fourth place overall. This was impressive performance from Bartlett considering he ran 1:20 faster than he did on the same course three weeks earlier.xsmall__A2_0879_1

Bartlett was joined by Yeltsen Vasquez (27:22), Ricky Oschner (27:23), Jorge Mendoza (27:43), Mark Mojarro(28:22), Samuel Dominguez (28:59) and Jorge Mendez (29:14).

Coach Jorge Medina commented on the race, “I am pleased with the results we showed today. Our top three men are out to keep their legs fresh for conference; if they had raced today I am confident that we would be bringing home first for both teams.”

Come see the Sharks as they return to action in the HPU Invitational on Oct. 25 at Kahuku Golf Course.
