MCCThe Hawai’i Pacific Men’s Cross Country Team competed in the PacWest Conference Championship Friday. The team placed fourth with four runners making the All-PacWest Team.

This year the PacWest Conference Championship was held at the infamous Woodward Park in Fresno, CA. The Sharks met other rival schools from the PacWest in hopes of out doing their second place performance from the previous year. However, the Sharks fell just short of third place by four points.

Senior Leandro Santillan had an excellent race finishing in seventh place with a time of 25:30, making the first team All-PacWest, however, he was not the only Shark that made the All-PacWest Team. Sophomore Cody Bartlett and Senior Fermin Murillo-Villagran made the second team. Bartlett came in 12th with a time of 25:42 and Murillo-Villagran came in 14th with a time of 25:56. Jorge Mendez was the last Shark to make the All-PacWest Team finishing 20th with a time of 26:10

Junior Jorge Mendoza was the next Shark to finish with a time of 26:37, placing 28th. He was joined by Senior Yeltsen Vasquez (36th). Freshman Ricky Ochsner, made his PacWest Championship debut running a time of 26:59 and finishing 37th, he was the 11th freshman to cross the finish line.

Coach Jorge Medina had this to say about the race, “This is the fastest team I have coached at HPU and it just goes to show how much the level of competition has increased in the PacWest. Sure this was not the result we were hoping for, nonetheless, we cannot dwell on this defeat. We have to let this race go and focus our attention on regionals in two weeks.”

The Sharks will return to action for redemption on November 22 at the West Regional Championship in Billings, Montana.
