Starting on March 14th at 8:00 am at beautiful Queen’s Beach in Waikiki, the Sharks will compete on the sand vs. local rival Chaminade. In what has always been a hotly contested event, HPU beat Chaminade in seven of the twelve matches they played last year. “It’s nice to take our local rivalry onto the sand surface as there is more individual bragging rights for the players,” commented Head Coach Daryl Kapis.
The next night (March 15th) the women will be taking their skills indoors as they will be playing Division I North Texas. UNT finished last season 22-10 and advanced to the second round of the Conference USA post-season tournament before eventually losing to Western Kentucky. “We’ve been very lucky over the years to play against a good indoor team in the spring, and this is no exception,” added Kapis. The match will be played on the campus of Saint Andrew’s Priory and will start time at 4:30 pm.
On March 19th the women will be back on the sand vs. Southern California, Nebraska, and California. The event will have different pairs running throughout the day with matches starting at 8:00 am at Queen’s Beach. A pairing schedule will be released closer to the event date.
Next, on March 21st the women head back to the indoor courts. In a scrimmage on the North Shore, Hawaii Pacific will play against local rival BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders are five-time conference winners, and advanced to the regional semi-final in 2014. HPU lost to BYUH in a five-set thriller at home, but dropped a three-set match on the road.
On April 18th, the Sand Volleyball Showcase pits HPU against four Division I opponents with Grand Canyon, San Jose State and Hawaii competing in a winner-take-all event at Queen’s Beach with a start time of 8:00 am.
